For the first time in my adult life, I am witnessing first generation Africans flourish in America. When I look at my social media feed, I see dynamic pictures of African entrepreneurs, thought leaders, artists, doctors, students, models all pursing their dreams and in some cases living their dreams. These striking images are a boon because the images I grew up with about my people centered on one-dimensional caricatures of African people. I am stoked to see that we are now moving past those archaic storylines. On the other hand, I am concerned that we are not telling our stories of success and challenges in our careers. After all the overarching goal of parents’ of first generation Africans is to see their children hold successful careers in the West. My burning questions are:
Are first gens thriving in the Western career playground? If so, what are their challenges and success stories?
We will be delving into this area more deeply.
